Samples

The NMDP maintains a Research Sample Repository of cell and serum samples collected from donors and recipients with their consent. Samples are stored as:

  • Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC)
  • B-Lymphoblastoid cell lines (B-LCL)
  • Granulocytes
  • Serum
Both unpaired samples and donor-recipient paired samples exist in the Research Sample Repository. Samples from recipients are drawn before the patient’s conditioning regimen begins. Prior to January 1, 2000, 100-day post-transplant samples were also drawn.

Data Available with Samples

Each donor and recipient sample is identified only by coded numbers that do not allow identification of the Transplant or Donor Center that provided the sample. The NMDP must contact each center and receive prior written consent before providing information identifying the Transplant or Donor Center.

Reported HLA typing, date of typing, date of transplant, race, sex, age, recipient diagnosis and pre- or post-transplant sample status will be provided with each recipient sample upon request.

Reported HLA typing, race, sex and age will be provided with each donor sample upon request.

Information on the recipient's baseline and post-transplant outcome, including occurrence of graft versus host disease (GVHD), engraftment status, disease-free survival, are collected by the NMDP and available to investigators. Use of these data in conjunction with donor-recipient samples would require a Study Proposal to be submitted.

Restrictions

  • The intended use for these samples is to facilitate research projects.
  • Commercial use of samples from the NMDP Research Sample Repository is strictly forbidden without the prior written consent of the NMDP.
  • Third-party distribution of any of the samples from the NMDP Research Sample Repository is strictly forbidden without the prior written consent of the NMDP.
  • Upon request, the requestor shall return to the NMDP any samples obtained from the Research Sample Repository.
  • After testing is complete, samples must be disposed of according to local and state biohazardous waste laws. Samples must not be retained indefinitely.
